Tips for encouraging development of children with CVI:
Baseline for the visual regard
Place images on a black background

• Often attracted to single color, Mylar® adapted or
moving, lighted materials
• Objects presented at near and to the left or
right of midline
• Quiet environment
• May begin with a quick peek at objects

• Present familiar materials adapted with Mylar®
and/or moving to gain visual attention
• Limit clutter in the background
• Shine a light on the object, if needed
• Present objects at near and left/right of midline
• May begin with a quick peek, look away and reach
• Look and reach skills refine, so eyes and hand are
in same place at same time – even for a moment
• Present 3D, familiar object to child and verbally
label it
• Next, present 2D picture of object
• To develop concept of picture vs. object, present
2D and 3D targets simultaneously and label
• Increase number of pictures as child progresses
• Backlighting may be helpful
